#BLIZZARD STARCRAFT SERIES#
A Netflix original series is in the works and seems unaffected by these cancellations. Overwatch in late 2022 will receive the maps and heroes planned for Overwatch 2, but not the PvE modes. Overwatch 2 has been cancelled, as have multiple smaller mobile projects set in the same universe. Overwatch is believed to be unsalvageable, failing to capture any modern interest. It is going to build off of the autobattler modes added. The last report said it was canon to WoW, though it is unknown whether this will change with WoW entering maintenance mode.Ī Hearthstone spin-off game is coming out. It will not borrow from Hearthstone, which will remain separate and continually updated with new expansions.Ī Warcraft mobile MMORPG project has been in the works since 2019 and will continue under Insight, focusing on drawing in an audience in China. It is currently believed to not have factions. The base game will focus on Valansess (the Eastern Kingdoms) and Outland, with playable races from both worlds. It is not a sequel but a total reboot with new lore. This is going to be developed by a majority new team than those who made and worked on WoW. This will be the last Classic expansion planned.Ī new untitled World of Warcraft successor MMORPG is in the works, looking to take a lot from FFXIV. 9.3, despite the name, has nothing to do with Shadowlands and is just made up of salvaged stuff from 10.0.Ĭlassic servers will be merged into one or two with the launch of WotLK Classic in 2023. The little work that was already put into the expansion after Shadowlands will be released 9.3 sometime in 2023. World of Warcraft is entering official maintenance mode. The Diablo team, like the Hearthstone team, will be mostly unaffected by the company shifts. An untitled Diablo PvP game will begin development under Insight.
#BLIZZARD STARCRAFT PC#
Diablo Immortal will receive a PC and console release a year after its mobile release. A remake of the original Diablo is in the works. Much of Blizzard, though not all, will be sacked and replaced with new employees for Insight.ĭiablo is considered by far the most promising franchise at the present. It is going to be replaced by a new team called Insight that will be a more direct part of the renamed Activision Insight. Blizzard Entertainment is being dissolved early 2022. Pre-order my new sci-fi novel Herokiller, and read my first series, The Earthborn Trilogy, which is also on audiobook. Not for a long while.įollow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Maybe we will see StarCraft again someday, but not now. Losing them, losing the series as a whole, losing any chance at spin-offs, it really feels like the firm end of something that was a big part of who I was as a gamer. Maybe I’m also just feeling nostalgic with the recent untimely deaths of Geoff “iNcontroL” Robinson and John “TotalBiscuit” Bain who were huge figures in the StarCraft community and icons when I was growing up with StarCraft esports. Halo was essentially the shooter version of StarCraft with its own races equivalent to Terran (humans), Protoss (Covenant) and Zerg (Flood), but Blizzard itself could never get it done, and still can’t get it done, as recently as this past year. Ever since I was a kid I have been dreaming of an expanding StarCraft universe with new games based on the worldbuilding of the original series, and yet it seems like that’s just never going to happen.

#BLIZZARD STARCRAFT HOW TO#
It also stands to reason that Blizzard just cannot figure out how to get StarCraft outside of its RTS framework, as evidenced by two cancelled StarCraft shooters now, which is a huge shame. The genre is just not popular anymore, and for Activision’s purposes, it’s one that is very, very hard to monetize effectively post-launch, given how that type of game rests on a knife’s edge of balance, and even cosmetics could upset that. StarCraft 3 doesn’t really seem like a logical thing to pursue at this point, especially if Blizzard has decided that if they are going to make another RTS, it’s going to be Warcraft 4.
